from slab to stoolSo we were presented with a challenge: producing seven stools that have 12" diameter seats, 2" thick with a quick turnaround. The solution was to find a thick maple slab here in Brooklyn. And there it was - a tree that was cut in Greenwood Cemetery during the cleanup from the damage of Hurricane Sandy.

JP marked off the tops and carved them out, and we ended up with perfect silver maple circles. Once they were mounted on legs, we applied a white stain to achieve a bleached color: Rubio Monocoat Precolor in Nordic White was used for the sides and legs, and the tops were painted. The color palette was selected by our client, interior design firm The White Arrow, also here in Brooklyn.

The finished products: five table height stools (left), plus two counter height stools. All the stools were finished with Rubio Monocoat Oil in 5% White. We tested several colors of the Rubio Monocoat oil. The 5% White contains enough of a pure white stain to offset the yellow tone that wood can take on when an oil is used as the final protective seal.
Many thanks to the White Arrow for their beautiful design -- you can't tell from the photos but the stools are also very comfortable! |
